Abstract

This dissertation investigated the Critical Research Question: What are the key external factors influencing Generation Z’s internal quest for spiritual renewal? The study examined biblical, historical, and contemporary revival movements, including the Exodus, Pentecost, the Great Awakenings, the Jesus Movement, Charismatic Renewal, Brownsville, Toronto, and Asbury, to identify recurring patterns linking external pressures to spiritual awakening. Using a qualitative design, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve Generation Z participants who experienced spiritual searching, renewal, or a deepened faith between 2020 and 2025, exploring how contemporary external pressures influence spiritual openness and transformation. The findings revealed six major themes: (1) crisis as a catalyst for renewal, (2) loneliness and relational fragmentation, (3) identity and purpose seeking, (4) institutional distrust, (5) authentic Christian community, and (6) spiritual encounter and renewal. The data showed that external pressures such as cultural instability, social isolation, uncertainty, and distrust of institutions often created conditions that increased spiritual openness, leading participants toward encounters with God, authentic community, and renewed identity in Christ. The findings closely parallel revival patterns observed throughout Scripture and church history, suggesting continuity in how God works across generations. This study concludes that while Generation Z faces unique challenges associated with a digitally connected yet relationally fragmented culture, many of the same external pressures that preceded historical awakenings continue to foster spiritual renewal today. The research contributes to practical theology and ministry by providing insight into how churches can v more effectively engage Generation Z through authentic community, identity-centered discipleship, and environments that cultivate meaningful encounters with God.
